Food has always been one of my favourite ways of getting to know a place — although I am not going to pretend that every meal is extraordinary simply because it was eaten somewhere new.
This section is for restaurants, cafés, bakeries, markets, local specialities, coffee and the occasional dish that deserves considerably more discussion than it was probably expecting.
I am interested in the food itself, but also in everything around it: where it comes from, why people eat it, how traditions change, what makes a restaurant worth returning to and why two versions of supposedly the same dish can taste completely different.
Some places will be elegant; others may involve a paper plate, a market stall or a table squeezed into a corner somewhere. Price and formality matter much less to me than whether something has character and whether I would genuinely want to eat it again.
And yes, coffee will continue to appear with suspicious regularity. The name of the blog has to earn its keep somehow.
